A regional trial court has granted Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) chair Nur Misuari permission to attend the tripartite meeting with the Philippine government and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from November 10 to 12.
Misuari’s petition to travel to Jeddah, where he lived in exile from the early 1970s to 1996, was granted by Judge Winlove Dumayas of the Regional Trial Court Branch 59 in Makati City on condition he would not, among others, engage in any political or other activity that would be inimical to the Philippine government, while abroad, and he would return by November 13. From the beginning, the GRP opposed Misuari going to Jeddah, and pushed for meetings to be held in the Philippines. At the last minute, the issue of a “Sovereign Guarantee” kept him from traveling. It can be hoped that with several weeks to arrange such a document, Misuari will be able to attend the second meeting, scheduled for January 14, 2008.
