Not your kind of fishing expedition in Southwestern Mindanao
Politicians have mulled the passage of a bill on tuna handline fishing and a regulatory mechanism for the use of tuna handline fishing boats before the start of the political campaign season next year.
The bill was reportedly endorsed as one of a congresswoman’s top priorities. Let us see how she could help the tuna fishing industry in General Santos City and neighboring places.
The proposed law, which has been pending at the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food since 2004 was among the main concerns discussed by tuna industry players during their recent national congress in General Santos City.
In a resolution, the delegates urged the Senate to fast-track the passage of the bill to help more than 2,500 tuna handline fishing boats from the city and the neighboring areas.
The resolution stressed that the fisheries code failed to differentiate the requirements of the handline fishing and handline fishing boat from that of purse seine fishing.
This is no joke. This involves taking care of the fishing industry at the same time looking at fishery reource management in a larger scope. MindaNews’ Allen Estabillo reports on this here.
