Councilors hit NGOs for “Kalabasa Awards”

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/03 October) — Councilors here used the regular
session’s privilege hour today to criticize groups for insulting them with a
“Kalabasa (Squash) Award” last week.

Pro aerial spray ban groups gave the “award” to Councilors Nilo Abellera, Victorio Advincula, Danilo Dayanghirang, and Diosdado Mahipus last week in mock award rites at a park adjacent to the Sangguniang Panglungsod.

The legislators, who were accused of delaying the passage of the ordinance banning aerial spraying in plantations, lambasted the groups for insulting them.

The four councilors denied they have vested interests in the aerial spraying issue and said they were only batting for proper deliberation of an important legislation.

Non-government organization Interface Development Interventions (IDIS) Incorporated and Mamamayan Ayaw sa Aerial Spraying (MAAS) were behind the awards. IDIS linked Dayanghirang to Marsman, an agricultural company that is into banana production. They Also pointed out that Abellera owns a 15-hectare land leased by another banana company.

IDIS reported that residents near banana plantations were disappointed with
the four councilors. Read story here.
