DOH: ‘No takers’ of free AIDS drugs in regions

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / October 6) – It is for free but there are no takers.

Health Undersecretary Ethylene Nieto said the government is giving
free an anti-retroviral (ARV) drug to people living with Acquired
Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), but there are no takers yet in the
regions around the country.

Supply of the drugs is fast depleting due to expiration and additional
support could be realigned to other countries, said Nicholas Alipui,
country representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef)
in the opening of the 8th Philippine National AIDS Convention.
Nieto said the ARVs had been distributed in regional offices of the
Department of Health and are made available to patients with
sufficient viral load.

Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial, Department of Health regional
director, said however, that two of the five AIDS cases in
Southeastern Mindanao have availed of the drugs. (Read story here).
