Arroyo to speak in Coco farmers convention in Davao

At least 5, 000 members of coconut farmers’ associations nation-wide will converge here for the First National Coconut Farmers Convention at the University of Mindanao gymnasium.

 

The convention was organized by the Bishops-Ulama-Priests-Pastors-Lumad Conference (BUPPFALUC).

 

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is expected to give the convention’s keynote speech.

 

Government sources said Arroyo is due here for at least an hour and will fly back to Manila after her speech.Edgar Bahala, officer in charge of the Philippine Coconut Authority extension office in Davao City said the President is likely to address issues and concerns of the industry, like the release of a P1 billion fund for the rehabilitation of the country’s coconut industry.

Sec. Romulo Neri, National Economic Development Authority chief, announced Wednesday the government is ready to release P 1 billion fund to help rehabilitate the country’s coconut industry.

 

“The fund will be released anytime now,” he said when interviewed by reporters. He said major rehabilitation of the country’s coconut industry is due as the country braces for its bio-diesel law which requires the use of bio-diesel from coconut oil.

Last year, BUFFALUC pledged to push for more awareness on the controversial coconut levy issue in a forum here.

The religious group came up with an action plan pushing for an information drive to help coconut farmers.

Neri said he hopes around P60 billion more funds from the controversial coco levy fund will finally be released to the farmers.

He said major rehabilitation of the country’s coconut industry is due as the country braces for its bio-diesel law which requires the use of bio-diesel from coconut oil.

The religious group came up with an action plan pushing for an information drive to help coconut farmers.

 

The group decided to produce a primer, which will contain the details and all the necessary information regarding the coco levy issue.
