1ST BIMP-EAGA marathon set today
DAVAO CITY (March 30/MindaNews) – The 1st International Brunei-Indonesia- Malaysia- Philippines- East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Marathon fires off April 1 with at least twelve foreign and 6 local top runners vying for honors in the 10-kilometer run18 to 23 years old runners. Lawyer Inday Sara Duterte, daughter of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, will fire the gun starting the race at 6 a.m. a short opening rites to be graced by BIMP-EAGA Sports Council Chairman and Philippine Sports Commission Commissioner Leon “Bingoy” Montemayor and sports minesters from the four member countries.
” This race will mark the 13th Anniversary of the BIMP-EAGA and one of the sport highlights of the BIMP-EAGA week, “Montemayor said.
Long-distance runner’s Juneil Bunsit and Vivian Avergonzado will lead Team Mindanao-Philippine s campaign in the men’s and women’s class respectively.The Tagum City native Bunsit and Avergonzado won gold medal’s in their respective events during the Davao Region Private School Athletic Association Meet two weeks ago. The two will lead four other local runners in the race, which offers P15, 000 for the top winner.
Hanzel Endapan of Bukidnun and Orland Leonar of Davao City will join Bunsit in the men’s class while Jenalyn Matunghay and Sheen Labrado will join Avergonzado in the women’s side.
The event is organized by the BIMP-EAGA Sports Council, in partnership with the BIMP-EAGA Tourism Council, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the City Government of Davao, the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo), and the participating local government units of Mindanao and Palawan.
Also supporting the international event are the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the Office of Congressman Antonio Floirendo, Jr., Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM), GTZ, Holiday Spa, JVA Group of Companies, TADECO, Davao City Water District (DCWD), and Coca-Cola Bottlers Incorporated.
