TODAY YESTERDAY: Malaysian official confident GRP, MILF will sign peace

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/08 April 2006) – Malaysian Deputy Defense Minister Yang Berhomat Dato’ Hji Zainal Abidin Bin Hji Zin expressed optimism the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front will be able to sign a peace agreement before October this year.

In an interview with reporters, Dato’ Zainal said he sees the sincerity of both parties in pursuing a peace agreement. “If both parties will be supportive in their undertaking, I don’t think there will still be hindrance to achieve such goal.”

“When you track for peace, confidence is necessary. While negotiating, when you find that [a] certain point is beneficial, then go for it, but if not, hold on and talk on that matter,” he added.The deputy minister led a 30-member delegation which
included Maj. Gen. Dato’ Hj Yahya Bin Hji Bidin,
Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel of the
Malaysian Armed Forces, and Sobre bin Hussin of the
Prime Minister’s Department, during a 4-day visit to
the Malaysian-led International Monitoring Team.

The IMT is composed of 56 military officials from
Malaysia, Brunei and Libya tasked to monitor the
implementation of the ceasefire agreement between the
government and the MILF.

Dato Zainal and party arrived Friday, April 7, to
visit the IMT-SOCSARGEN Team Site, based in Lagao in
this city. With him was retired Brig. Gen. Ramon
Santos, Chairman of the GRP Coordinating Committee on
the Cessation of Hostilities.

He cited the IMT led by the Head of Mission Maj. Gen.
Dato’ Pahlawan Soheimi bin Abbas for its remarkable
performance in sustaining peace efforts.

Malaysian Lt Col Abdul Radzak bin Husain, head of the
IMT –SOCSARGEN Team Site, welcomed the visitors with a
sumptuous dinner where Malaysian cuisine was served.

Mindanao State University’s Kabpapagariya Ensemble
entertained them with Moro songs and dances.

General Santos City Mayor Pedro Acharon, Sarangani
Vice Governor Bridget Chiongbian-Huang, Sultan Kudarat
Vice Governor Donato A. Ligo and Brig. Gen. Alfredo
Cayton of the 601st Infantry Brigade were also
