(Updated) Davao bishops plea for return to peace talks with Reds

Davao bishops have called for the government and the New People’s Army to return to the negotiating table as hostilities escalate in Davao del Norte in the aftermath of the
rebels’ raid of Dapecol on Easter Sunday.

Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla said it is timely for both parties to resume the peace process because there is no other way to peace but to sit down and talk about
it. “No military action can achieve that,” he said.

Bishop Mariano Apilado, of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, said both
sides are only trying to gain mileage out of the situation. “It is the poor that suffer most in the attacks,” he told MindaNews after launching an inter-religious initiative to help educate the public to ensure free, honest, and orderly elections. Read full story here.
