Bukidnon State College, now a university

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / June 1) – Bukidnon’s 83-year old Bukidnon
State College is now a university, its administration announced in its
Internet website.

President Arroyo signed into law Republic Act No. 9456 on May 15,
2007, which declared the elevation of the BSC into a university. She
signed the Act three months after the Senate approved the proposal on
February 19.

The signing also came a month after nine graduates of BSC’s School of
Law, the first law school in the province, passed the 2006 bar
examinations.

BSC projects itself as the “heart of teacher education in Mindanao.”The new university, to be called Bukidnon State University, is the
province’s second university after Bukidnon Agricultural School was
converted into what is now known as Central Mindanao University in
1965. The BSC opened in the central Mindanao province as Bukidnon
Normal School in 1924.

A staff at the BSC administration office told MindaNews Friday via
telephone the inauguration rites will be on June 14. Current college
president Dr. Victor M. Barroso will become the first university
president.

According to its website, BSU “shall primarily provide advanced
education, higher technological, professional instruction and training
in the fields of education, arts and sciences, public administration,
information technology, accountancy, law and other relevant fields of
study. It shall also promote research and extension service, and
provide progressive leadership in its areas of specialization.”

As of November 12, 2006, Bukidnon State College has seven schools,
including the schools of Graduate Studies, Law, Arts and Sciences,
Business Administration and Information Technology, Education,
Community Education and Industrial Technology, School of Nursing, and
Laboratory Schools for pre-school, elementary and secondary education.

In 1924, BSC started as a two year secondary school known as Bukidnon
Provincial Elementary School. Four years later, it started to offer a
four-year secondary normal curriculum.

In 1976, Presidential Decree 944 converted BNS into Bukidnon State
College. (Walter I. Balane / MindaNews)

  1. eric conrad epie says :

Congratulations! one question, what will happen to the BSC now BSU’s website? will it use http://www.bsu.edu.ph? that would be a blunder, it is owned by Benguet State University. Well this is a headache for their web administrator or just retain ww.bsc.edu.ph any it’s known for having the domain, again congratulations!

  2. eric conrad epie says :

sorry the site should have been http://www.bsc.edu.ph, anyway its…

    typographical error.

  3. dante says :

Thanks Bro. Waltz for disseminating the news. Ric, as of now, BSC’s domain name will remain as http://www.bsc.edu.ph. You’re right BengSU owns the bsu.edu.ph, that’s why we are still thinking of a good “sounding” domain name. After we have resolved the name, we still have to register it. Other BSUs are Bulacan and Batangas State Us. They named themselves as BULSU and BATSTATE-U. 😉

  4. Waltzib says :

Thanks Dante and Eric for dropping by. Wala pa diay na ko na link ang “BSU”.
Thinking out loud: What about naming the new university after Bukidnon’s forefathers?
like Datu Mampaalong State University? “BSU” —so abused name napud for state Us.
Aside from veering away from the problem of URL, it also honors our ancestors —- well I’m here again. hehe.

  5. kingkoy says :

  8. Concern says :

Though it is called a university but the fact is that the English Training is very PITY when you go abroad as an English Teacher. They would asked you” Which school” very obvious, pronunciation is NOT STANDARD why? because of the teachers who is in charge of that course. They still need a lot of training for standard pronunciation as they will laugh at us when the foreigner listen our spoken English. It’s hard to understand. They should hire a teacher who is very knowledgeable about phonetic as it is considered as the most important in speaking English. When the teacher arrived abroad as an English Teacher is very shameful that you still need to go back from basic since your English pronunciation can’t pass to their standard. If you have question about this, try to come to some country and first time they hear Filipinos speak English it is REALLY HARD and has a very strong Philippine English accent.

    • bse english turns ab english says :

tama jud ….I’m majoring english here …I love the university..but sad to say..some teachers failed to understand the importance of teaching the students properly when it comes to speaking english..if students need spoonfeeding in order to learn..then why not do it..after all..that is what we’re after,,.

  9. Concern says :

Many graduates from BSC especially English Major, they tried to go abroad as an English Teacher, we asked what’s your major? English, everybody’s eyes were so BIG as they couldn’t believe that your an English major from BSC Bukidnon couldn’t demo at the first time but the new teachers proudly say I am a CERTIFIED Teacher as the same time English Major in BSC BUkidnon. Very FUNNY HUH! Not only this, many teachers graduated from that school they had an empty head after graduation why? the teachers are not strict to their students and it is easy to pass the exam and they can give flat 1.0 grade but actually it is a cheat.

In addition to that, the teacher itself doesn’t know very well about the subject she or he is teaching so of course the result is not very good. Try to listen the spoken English of most teachers in the Philippines, VERY FUNNY! You are being descriminated in the other country because of your performance.

    • krash says :

nope!! I am a student of BSU and I left my very own college because my teachers in English were unreasonably terror …they humiliate students who can’t pronounce well..maybe some of the instructors are not strict enough to scare students and instead they were the ones who’s scared…and anyway..every sem. they will let us evaluate our instructors and grade them …there are lots of criteria to base unto so that students can let the admin know about how thier instructors teach and handle them…only nstp instructors give flat 1 easily

Well, I’m very proud that BSC was converted into a state university. Continue molding the students to become proactive and efficient to have a brighter future. Goodluck and more power to your vision!!!!

  15. tisoy says :

i was glad when i know that our school converted into a university at least i can boast something to my co-teachers here in thailand that our school now is bringing pride of bukidnon and that makes as proud to be the product of the continueous support of the faculty of BSU its my pleasure as mentor of BSC and now BSU go on and be fruitful BSU

  16. cha says :

am really glad am an alumna of the former BSC, learned plenty of brilliant stuff from my equally brilliant professors. truly, BSU is the heart of teacher education in mindanao. it has molded me into “how i teach stuff” for better-learning-today. the teaching strats that i employ in my classes are beyond compare for these were acquired from the likes of dr. neonitta danao, the late dr. erlinda p. cordova, dr. remedios barroso, and dr. genoveva ablanque. may these professors’ tribe increase. saddens me to the max that dr. remy barroso has retired so with dr. neonitta danao. hope there are similarly radiant mentors who could sustain their esteemed places.

lately heard that BSC-education now is not that quality as it used to be. hope this is jz a mere gossip. feel any hints of truism?

    to BSU, kudos!

  17. ella says :

    Hey guys!

It is so sad that you look down at the graduates of BSC which is now BSU.

Just to boost your confidence, BSC or BSU students..have you heard of the former graduate of Secondary Education Batch 1998, Cecilia Mag-isa who is now Estoque.

She won as the Microsoft’s Most Innovative Teacher in the Innovation in Community Category in the Worldwide Innovative Teachers Forumi Philadelphia USA.

Check her out and google her name who is now Cecilia M. Estoque. Listen how she talks in English…it’s not as what you describe students in BSC-

Keep your head up! There’s hope for you guys!

Comment on No. 8. Excuse me, do not generalize all Filipinos. That depends on school you graduated from at saka na students na rin yan. There are good Professors at Bukidnon State College (now university) Dr. Danao is one who finished a PhD in Applied Linguistics at the Philippine Normal University in Manila. Sayang. she has retired.

  30. leur, CTEd says :

regarding the deficiency of the recent graduates in English, it’s no longer the teacher’s concern to find them a job. i would like to stress that it’s up to the graduates to be proficient or sharpen their ability in speaking and other English skills. besides, when they were on the training grounds they didn’t do their part as students. lakwatsa may coincide with the concept.

there were many few who had mastered nonEnglish courses, yet they did express their ideas flawlessly in English. thus, i say what fate the graduates befall today are their choice, neither of their mentors nor their Alma Mater.

  31. leur, CTEd says :

another shameful thing i would like to be bursted out is:
teachers, please do practice what you teach.

i have accounts of irresponsible-to-be-called teachers. if you wish to know them, visit me at the student lounge. JOKE! seryoso kaayo mo, ai?!

shall i say that these teachers whom i’m referring to are language teachers? one of them is an Eng102, World Lit, Phil. Lit teacher who smokes before the students in the classroom. Sir: pagbag-o na kay smoking kills biya, not just yourself but also you’re putting us at risk.
another one is from my beloved school. she is really fond of failing students, although she is not that of standardized. fortunate are we now that she flee to CMU, the school where she can proliferate her glory as the most idiot teacher in the town.

    • hapi says :

haha!! I guess I know that teacher who fled to where she is now..I once argue with her in our class knowing that she is far more fluent than me but she can’t comprehend better than I am..rawr!! she graded me 3..and that subject is 4 units..

  32. mhedy says :

I’m so proud that my alma matter is now a university.I’m a product of that prestigious institution. After how many years of struggling to become a university, now the school achieve it.I’m one of the fruitful student who gain lots of experiences and knowledge from that school. The school as well as the instructors molded me as what I am today.I salute to all my instructors before.

I hope the school will hire the best teachers so that they can produce a quality professionals also in the future.

As once part of the academic community, I’m so proud what BSC-BSU has gone so far. Goodluck to a new level of accreditation. That’s exciting and challenging though.

  37. phycophyta says :

I was really shock, totally shock that BSC is now a state University…Marami ksing hambog!!kala mo kung sinong langaw na makatuntung lang sa kalabaw ay kalabaw na(I hope BSUans understand 8???)E wala ngang napatunayan na academically excellent sila…Tingnan nyu yung mga cum laude nila…neh hindi nga mkapsa sa LET at Board Exam for Accoutancy…ano ba yan…Lam nyu nakakahiya kayu..baka sabihin ng iba na bobo ang taga bukudnon..makonsensya nman kyu…Please lang pkilagay yung ilang persent ang pasers nyu…Center of Excellence in Education daw..?? Hi all, thanks for dropping by in this blog.
@Fe Alava, thanks maam for droppng by.

@phycophta – Hi there. It seems you have a not-so-good experience with BSU. Anyway, thanks for bringing up those defects. But there are also good things din naman siguro.

I’m not from BSU but I know like other academic institutions its facing so many challenges, kumbaga birth pains of a university.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for more improvements, right?
After all, if we really love Bukidnon, we can only hope and possibly do something to improve it and institutions within. 🙂

Anyway, have a nice day, and hope will drop by again and again.

    -Istambay sa Mindanao

  39. phycophyta says :

hahahaha sory istambay but your conclusion is wrong..(It seems you have a not-so-good experience with BSU=>Istambay).Kakaawa naman kyung pag analyze mo ng statement…parang 8s just an indication na you have low level of analyzing a simple sentence..palibhasa you are immune na kasi of spoon feed exams….well..well..well..If I will be in bukidnon why should I let my self enroll in your university???Hallerrr…are you insane??? I just do prefer to enrol in CMU…an aclaimed institution who higly trained students for global competitivenes..heto ha pki search sa internet (starmometer) then find top 20 universities in the Philippines…at sana please lang punuin nyu ng banner ang labas ng school nyu ng mga kapakipakinabang na banner hindi yung puro promote lang ng promote ,lagyan nyu din ng percent passing rate at at rank nyu in the whole philippines…Ewan ko nga ba if i also consider your school as a dumping site of rubbish students??? Marami din kasi akong naririnig na very improve na daw ang grades nila ngayun magmula nong i nevect sila sa kanilang old schools at naging scholar pa…huh ang bulok na kamatis talaga pag ineref nagiging useful pala???

  40. Istambay says :

    Hi Phycophyta,

Whatever you say, it doesn’t change my view about the world, including BSU. Your allegations might be true but the way you say it reflects your kind of person.

Please learn how to read first before criticizing others.

We have a struggling but happy world out there that’s why I can’t understand why you are so foul and angry.

C’mon, you can do better than that!

Anyway, prayers for a joyful and meaningful holidays.

    Have a happy day!
    🙂

  41. phycophyta says :

Ok, Lam ko kasing ganyan mag isip ang makikitid na utak…I have experience kasi sa ganyang mga situation..defensive kung baga???but I was cleanse because of the education from my school…We havent exposed kasi sa word na losser if we we will not accept our weaknesses..In my own assesment…I hope that the faculty of BSU should focus on the renewal of character of their students…In other words please try to be humble eventhough you are a payed state university (kasi sa pagkahabahaba ng inyung pangrap na nauudlot binayaran nyu na lang siguro ang mga tao na involved dito just to become a fake state university) hindi hambug kung baga…wag sanang mag sukdulan yung pagiging hambug nyu….Please..

    • hapi says :

siguro may karibal kang taga BSU or may nakaaway kang taga bsu ….hey human!!get some logic….love your own and improve it by doing the best for your school and embracing its nature…wag mong i promote ang school mo through saying negative things against its neghboring universities ..sabihin mo lahat ng kaya mong ibuga..wla naman sigurong kokontra…look at us..we congratulate BSU and say good things about it..we did not say good things about it and AFTERWARDS COMPARE IT TO OTHERS..IKAW RA DIHA mura kag unsa…be confident..ayw khadlok malabwan inyong school..sa students magtigi..kay sa maabot rana after graduation makit an..

    1. Thank you for dropping by and contributing to the discussion. I assure you I am delighted that this simple post has generated a free flowing discussion.

    2. I just would like to appeal that you will also exercise responsibility in posting messages such that you won’t defame anyone or any institution.

In other words, if we claim that the academic institution where we came from has high standards, then this discussion is the best venue where you can show that you are indeed a product of an institution of higher learning as shown by the way you discuss and the breeding expected of educated people.

    Thank you.

I am a product of BSC batch 2001 and took my masters in UP Diliman, I am now teaching in Western High School (one of the top high schools in the USA). There are tons of us, BSCians, who are here in the US and living up to the name of BSC. We are proud of our school. Our achievement is also an achievement of BSC (now BSU). Hindi po UGOK ang mga BSCians. We are what our school made us. Look at where we are now!

Before you point your finger at BSU and say that it’s not a standard school, blame your english teachers for not teaching you the standard english correctly!

    Go back to the basics

  59. english ni phycophyta says :

I salute you ISTAMBAY! this is such a wonderful blog! pasensya ka na kay phycophyta… masyado lang syang galit sa mundo.

In spite of all the put-downs of some bloggers about BSU, I can stand tall and be proud of all the past, present and future students and faculty members & staff of the Bukidnon State University. I have completed my undergrad school way back then. Didto ko sa una nagpuyo sa ilang Mr and Mrs Rafanan’s boarding house. I am also an alumni at Western Washington University in Washington State. I earned my masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling–not bad for a product of my very own BSU. Es gali, hari kag kapaok if BSU is moving forward regardless of the ‘list’.

Happy new year and happy 3 kings !!!! It’s been a long while I haven’t checked this page, been so busy for a couple of short vacations outside the city of orlando, florida, the amazing place of disneyland!Hope you can visit here one of these days…Do I know you in person? I hope I did met you before.

whoaaaaa, I was struck when I visited this page today simply because of several altercations of some sort regarding the newly converted BSU. Blame it to….BLOGGERS…its nature…so they say.

I understand BSU students are proud simply because the idea of BSC becoming a university is a kind of a dream come true being enrolled in a “university”. Horay !!!!!!!!at long last! To attain such status is something worth of a recognition for people who worked hard to achieve such goal…it’s not that easy I know! So people out there pls let’s be happy about that…if you feel happy about other people’s or school’s achievements it will surely bring about positive aura in your life…mind you,all the positive energies of the earth befall on you….that’s amazing!Be careful though of the negative ones…you might attract them the most and that all depends on you, isn’t it?

How I wish I was still there being part of those happy and proud faces witnessing what BSC and the people of Bukidnon have achieved so far. Though, Bukidnon is not my birth place but I’m equally proud of that city because of people like Dr. Okit, Dr. Laurito,Dr. Danao, Prof.Macabata,Prof.Cagulada, finally Dr. Tumapon and Dr. Barroso, the appointing officers of their respective presidency, who had confidence in me and vouched for my capabilities, hence I considered them as the first pillars of my teaching career in BSC way back 1997. Opps…take note, they were first but there were second, third and so on and so forth.

I believe that BSU’s status as a university is an academic journey towards academic excellence not only at one time but a continuous endeavor not only by the administration and faculty but also to students and parents or community as a whole.

Just like any other universities, BSU has its own birth pangs so to speak. I am an alumna of Mindanao State University-Marawi City. I know my Alma Mater has its own place in the academic spectrum of excellence but it also has its own achilles heels. Just like BSC-BSU,normally, I know it has its vulnerabilities too but let’s be happy of the glorious years and achievements in the past for these happy feelings would bring about positive energies guiding along BSU’s journey towards academic excellence which is a continuous quest of any school for that matter, right?

I was once a coach of one of the BSC’s participation in a Mindano-wide quiz bowl about Rizal’s life. Helen Pilandas was the champion, a BSIT student. Knights of Rizal staff were stunned, not expecting BSC to come out the champ because MSU was always on the top in the past years . BSC was never heard before for along time after Ms.Manginsay, if my memory serves me right, a champ, a BSC student too. What an achievement, though small to any one, but it was something of which I was a witness and I feel great. And I am equally proud of that being a part of BSC.

I am equally optimistic BSU community will continue to take positively on the challenges of those outsiders who don’t vouch on the school’s capability towards academic growth.

BSU’ans, love your academic competitors….hehehe…they may have some grain of truth in their own tentacles but let’s show them how educated we are in our way of managing both stresses and stressors in life…particularly in the manner we speak and write. Remember, the mouth speaks what the heart desires. The way we behave speaks what our trainings were from first at home, secondly in school. People’s condescending comments somehow has its own role in one’s life though. In work, there are a lot of wealthy employers here abroad who are so consumed of something in their lives that telling you upfront what they they don’t like in your work is a common observation….take note..they don’t mean personal about that…it’s your work that they’re not satisfied about. Filipino as I am, I’m kinda sensitive about that but I learned to manage along the way. I was telling these people of something too so we could adjust each other. It’s up to us how do we react to such challenges.Bring it on. To me, successful people are people who bloom and thrive where they are planted…and that makes life more meaningful and worth living.

Hello, BSC students,I miss you…as your teacher before in that school, let me tell you this… be continuously equipped with what the world of work demands. As I am here in the US, there are traits, skills, talents in me as a Filipino that my American counterparts are so proud…all around man lagi..versatile ba…my experiences both vicarious and direct as a teacher and a graduate student before in BSC-BSU made me what I am today. I don’t stop learning….I keep on reading, watching american TV programs, talking to people, it’s in that way I continuosly learning including its accent….wheww..quite hard though…but anything can be learned. To me, in communication , it’s not necessarily how perfect we are in our accent the way the americans do…but at least..we understand each other…Mind you, there are even notes in the office I read and got the tendency to correct it, teacher as I was, I learned the basic semantics. There are even words I knew that these americans don’t know…what happened is that, when they looked at the dictionary….bammmmmm…it’s there….I am telling them, “well, we are not in competition here…there are things, words that I know that you don’t know…either way.The truth is, you don’t have the monopoly of knowledge either…” Yes, english is their mother tongue but in terms of vocabularies…oh my…we Filipino teachers know a lot.Though I am conversant and confident in a way(teacher baya sa BSC)but sometimes, I have a funny feeling not to speak if people around me are not of the same wave length, you know what I mean? I would say I am more confident writing my thoughts. If I have to choose, I’d rather write than speak. That’s why I like to visit this web page, so interesting to read and write. Usahay ba, mahutdan man ko sa eninglis bya pod dinhi but I don’t have a choice…wala man koy bisaya nga silingan…sa telepono ra ko makabisaya if I’m talking to my friends..very rarely though….wheww… People here are fond of saying idiomatic expressions…making me scan my repertoire and covertly scratch my head and understand it by context…good enough,i got it correctly….but you know what,if I don’t know, I would rather ask than pretend, seriously…that’s the best way so far I learned, eminent disaster is prevented, right?

Wishing my scribblings today would give a spark of insights to BSU students and outsiders alike. Hope sharing to you my personal notes may give you some grain of humor but true life’s account of living here and give you some hints if you like to venture in the US in the future…you’ll never know. Whatever it is, the bottom line is, I am happy for BSC-BSU…. CONGRATULATIONS!You play a major part in advancing my life’s dreams here in the US.

    Hi istambay sa mindanaw,

I just want to affirm that BSCians are a mixture of normal students…there are dumbs, and there are smarts. No pun intended. As I remember my teaching years in college, graduates of the BSC laboratory schools were fairly smart…I like them because of their creativity, their vibrant ideas, their skills in communication. I am thankful of their presence in my class because I like to always challenge them to talk…share their ideas…it’s in that way it created a ripple effect to other freshmen students who were graduates from other schools who seemed to be timid and shy at first. I don’t blame them because they are new in school, still on its road to transition, adjustments are expected, but later on, wow…the interaction was great. Personality wise, either outward or inwardly, these students have changed. As a teacher, I loved to see them articulate their ideas, their opinions…after all, it’s my great pleasure to watch them grow academically in their own individual paces. I’m sad though for those students who failed in my class…they just have not tried that much maybe because of some personal reasons I don’t know. I just did what I was supposed to. But I was so generous too for those students who really stunned me of their performance.

Kudos to all BSCians-BSUans!!!!Your teachers and administrators have done their parts….it’s up to you to perform excellently at par, above or below? The choice is yours.

BEing a cumlaude isn’t absolutely a guarantee one will pass a licensure exam. (Modesty aside, I was one of them too…by choice, my bachelor’s degree is on psychology and luckily by then we don’t have licensure examination). There are other factors to consider too. Of course, mainly , the quality of academic training students get from school is the core of it all. Sometimes the culprit is, the pressure of being a cumlaude greatly affects the person and at the time of testing, mental energies are more consumed on that thought resulting to poor performance. Training students to be academically “tough”, a kind of student who would weather all storms in the academic setting, not spoon feeding them is still the best way. Given the proper guidelines on what is expected on them and be consistent on that, I think there is growth/learning on the process.Learning in any way is a lifetime endeavor, isn’t it? So there are hopes to all late bloomers…(I was once too to some facets of life)you can be great, you can excell to whatever field your interest would lead you. Being successful is being happy in the field where one is…not necessarily, being a cumlaude.

There are best teachers in BSC worthy of commendations because they are seriously committed to their teaching profession but there are also teachers there who seemed not to be. For those teachers who are worthy of emulations, let’s just say, JOB WELL DONE ma’am and sir for being a teacher…for being a real catalyst of change in the lives of people.

    HI ISTAMBAY SA MINDANAW,

It’s me again…I’m not busy today so I have all the time sending you whatever popped out in mind as I read a lot in this web page/website or whatever you call it. My apology for that, I’m not sure of the right technical jargon…blame it to my age, or to the law of practice.

MINDANAW is a name of an island where I was born…more specifically, in Baroy Lanao del Norte. Usahay ba disappointing kaayo makabasa ug mga panlait gikan sa mga ubang kaigsonan ta sa ubang kapopod an sa pilipinas…ilabi na sa mga estudyante sa ubang unibersidad sa kauluhan. I was once teaching in college in Paranaque, Metro Manila, I just don’t want to mention the name of such private school…confidentiality wise. As I was teaching there, I noticed my students from Mindanao felt inferior because of how their classmates from Manila treated them, looking down on them. As I challenged my Mindanaw students, they shone brightly at par with other students.

This is one thing I noticed, students from Mindanao have heavy accent when speaking tagalog resulting to some kind of social ridicule, a disaster to anyone who is from the province you know…so I advised them to speak in English instead……straight one.. not the taglish type. I don’t allow taglish in my classroom either. So there you go, Mindanaw students were good at that…speaking english straight…do we have other choice?LOL!!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS for being a Mindanaoan! It’s just a matter of practice….practice speaking the language, eventually, we would gain that confidence in speaking.

    Hi Maam Fe,

Thanks for your lenghty but insightful comments!
    I appreciate it, indeed.

I believe we have not met in person. But hopefully we meet when our paths cross.

I finished at Malaybalay City Central School (1990) and BSC-SSL (1994).

I took economics-management (double major) in U.P. Visayas.

I am a journalist by profession and am based here in Malaybalay City although I’m sent on assignment at times to Davao, CDO, and Cotabato cities.

I have deep interest in the outcome of this thread (topic) because we could see how a good news is received as a bad news to some.

I believe however, that if this blog must be kept, it should stay as a venue for freedom of expression along with responsibility.

The two values could be learned and that is the reason why I did not purge all the negative comments.

I have appealed (and still appealing), however, for those comment authors to be more responsible.

Together, let us make this venue a healthy place for decent exchanges among respectable indivuals despite our differences.

I also invite you all readers to create your own blogs.

It would be a worthy undertaking, if just to practice the craft of writing and providing opportunities for updating and expressing ideas.

    Happy New Year to all!

    Hi Fe,

Your insightful comments made me more proud of my old school (it was BNS pa sa una) Yikes! I belong to those karaan nga students. Among my instructors were Dr Ycaro, Dr Gellor, Leony Eduave, and many more dili ko na madumduman ang uban.
I can relate to what you mentioned about how some of the Maynilinians treated some of the folks from Mindanao like me. After graduation from BNS now BSU, I taught at Grace Christian High School, Sto. Domingo, Quezon City. Some of my fellow teachers somewhat treated me differently because of my accent kon magtinagalog lagi but I speak well in English compared to them. There were few teachers who bragged about their ‘Tate’ products like Avon they received from their relatives in USA. They wore most USA products at that time (which is no longer applicable nowadays since most of our goods here in USA are mostly made in China). Three years later, I moved to San Diego, CA and my co teachers were shocked since they never heard me talking about ‘tate’ stuff. So when they asked, I said, “You never ask me that my parents lived there in early 70’s.
It’s amazing how some people act the way they do. I’ve traveled different countries, lived in UK for three years and seven years in Japan. Now I’m finally situated in Marysville, Washington (about 40 minute-drive to Seattle and more than an hour drive to Vancouver, British Columbia).
Anyway, thanks again for your intelligent posting.

I’ve been to your place as I was with a group of Education faculty (with Dr. Jess Gellor,Dr. Lungay, Dr.Joy Tilanduca, etc.) observing our student teachers assigned there.

I’m proud of you Ma’am. You are another epitome of an educated and humble Bukidnon,Mindanaoan,Filipino person who have gone that far in your career. Take note, here in the US???? Wow, BNS-BSC-BSU has once again proven its worth in its unique way …not in words but in deeds. Your track record is great ….it is a proof that where ever we are, the character, the cultural and educational background in us greatly impact our endeavor in the future.

anyone could help me? Im planning to take my MA but still undecided what school. On my list PUP, UP and PLM..

  80. fealava says :

    hi giovanni,

    How are you?

So you are on a dilemma to what school you gonna take your MA ? Take note, any school has it’s own strengths and weaknesses in terms of academic program. Any school can be on a top list depending on what criterion is based…example, a university is number 1 based on enrolment population, you know what I mean?

To me it would be helpful for you to first of all decide on what specific area of specialization you wanted to take. Secondly, google on the internet which of these schools you are considering would offer you the best program.Look into their prospectus, what are its academic requirements? Is the whole package of the program necessary or not necessary to your job-related promotional requirement or even beyond..like your future endeavor and future career challenges? How about the market value of that school?that means, how marketable that school is in the working place? Does that school have such integrity (so to speak) to carry on that particular MA program you gonna take?

Having a wider background of the school you intend to enroll for your MA would be beneficial to you in making up your final decision. You’ve got to have some kind of reference point for comparison. Having said that, I think you may also wish to have an ocular visit to the school itself not necessarily so dependent on the website. Visiting the actual setting of the school would somehow give you some kind of being “in” that school, you know what I mean? I am personally concerned of this factor too because, learning environment could affect your learning performance.

I hope I have helped you out a bit in coming up with a sound judgment. I restrained from giving you which school from your list is the best.Though I have my own preference but I refrained from doing so simply because that’s against my counselling guiding principle. I commended you for coming up with 3 major names in your list. That’s a good sign for a more mature and responsible person.

Congratulations for all the achievements you have done so far in your life. Keep the ball rolling.
    God bless you.

  81. giovanni ryan says :

    Hi Maam Fe,

Thanks for the inspiring thoughts and encouragements. These would somehow help me if not would serve as my basis in choosing what school to enrol.

    Hi Bekyang.

    Greetings of Peace!

I am the moderator of this blog. May I remind you (and all those who did a similar thing before) to refrain from being “bastos” (foul, uncouth, impolite, discourteous, boorish, vulgar or nasty) in posting your piece here. (Please refer to my side bar page called: “Reminders on Posting Comments”. It is written in English. Please let me know if I need to translate it to Tagalog or Cebuano. Thanks.)

This online podium is for everyone so we expect freedom of expression but with respect for responsibility also.

Ma’am Fe Alava did ask you a very valid question: what did you mean by your description of behavior of BSU teachers. Just answer it.

You see, freedom comes with responsibility. You need to substantiate your opinion.

We follow a rule in blogging ethics (at least in Istambay): If you can’t back your accusations with substantiation. I will purge it. Meaning: Akong e-erase. Burahon. I’m not threatening anyone. I am just trying to remind everyone that wherever we are, whether in blogs or at home, school, or in the streets, we should be responsible for our words and actions. That’s a lesson you could learn in kindergarten.

(Of course kapuyan pod ko mangdelete. I am busy with other things. Dili pod pleasant side nga naay police diri magbantay sa blogs aron mangita og sayop sa uban. Mao gani nga ang akong hangyo, please, please, please, ayaw ninyo ni himoa nga bulangan o boxing ring kay this is supposed to be a venue for dialogue and understanding.

I just hope the kids in here grow up and blend with the rest of the civil and responsible portion of the society (the blogosphere).

Thanks po and pasensya sa akong probably toxic appeal!

    God Bless everyone.

    -Istambay sa Mindanao

  86. fealava says :

    Hi Istambay,

Thank you for your reminders..You are not only a responsible journalist but a great teacher too in the making…teaching the rules/ethics that anyone participating in your blogs should respectfully observe. Great job!

I was once a teacher in that school but now living in USA. Nonetheless, accusations without substantial evidence is to me very unfair for those teachers who dedicated their whole career life in teaching…very unfair for the administration who partially entrusted teachers who would carry out the school’s mission, goals and objectives…not fair too for taxpayers who believe that such university is a catalyst for change to achieve a better life for the province it serves.

Though I am thousand miles away from that school, let me be clear that my spirit as a teacher is still there no matter where I am now. I was a diligent taxpayer and now helping the government sustain the global economic crunch or crisis through my dollar remittances…a good Filipino citizen not an idiot.

I would definitely look out for what that government school stands for. Absolutely, I care about that..that’s one of my businesses I am minding about as a Filipino citizen.

I hope this is insightful learning for Bekyang.

Thank you. May God bless you in your journey towards transforming one self to be a responsible person.

Just wondering why ganun nalang kung man lait ang mga tao sa school namin. So what if our school is not Center of Excellence in Education. By the way to what school you finished your bachelor’s degree is not the ultimate measure na magaling ka na. Purke ba BSC or BSU graduate ka lang meaning your future is nasa alanganin? Isa akong graduate ng BSC. At ngayun nasa US na nagtuturo. Marami na sa amin dito ay nagmamayagpag at ilan na rin ang nagkaroon ng pangalan. Karamihan sa mga BScians dito ay nagtuturo ng Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, and English. As a matter of fact we are distributed to different states. Some taught in California, New York, New Jersey, Boston, North Carolina, Maryland, Washington, DC., etc. Take note marami rami rin ang nagtuturo sa high school magnet schools/ performing schools sa America. So wag naman ninyung ismulin ang mga graduate ng BSC. So far wala akong na encounter dito na teacher who is a product of CMU.

Actually each school has its own specialty. Only that BSC/ BSU is known for its education courses. For your information BSC is a former normal school . Some of its sister schools include Philippine Normal University, Cebu Normal University, Leyte Normal Univ. at iba pa. These schools are known for its educationcourses. Take note i’ve read one article before sa newspaper. May mga School Superintendents din in Mindanao ay product din ng BSC. To mention….

    1. Dr. Gloria Benigno…..Supt. in Oroquita i think before she came to bukidnon
    2. Dr. Rosemarie Gellor ( bukidnon )
    3. Dr. Hannah Magdale ( Asst. Supt. Misamis oriental / Supt. in Camiguin ) sh’es now in California

    4. Dr. Randolf Tortola ( bukidnon )

    Also.

    1. Dr. Jaime Gellor ( was former president of CMU )… pag sure mo oi..

    2. Dr. Godofredo Ycaro – PhD in Education ( Stanford University ) and former doctoral lecturer at UP Diliman. Itong si sir na ito as far as i remember ay inimbitahan ng CMU na maging moderator sa problema between CMU administration and BUFFALO / Tamaraw. ( tsk tsk tsk ). take note product sya ng BSC.

    3. Dr. Lourdes dela Torre. former high school teacher sa BSC school laboratory pinay rate ng XAvier University- College of Education.

    4. Dr. June P. Salana- currently Dean of Education sa Capitol University in CDO City.

    5. Ms. Cathy Onahon Hengania, Mathematic.s Chair ng Liceo University.

    6. Ms. Jadie . former Research Assistant sa UP math dept. shes now in US.

    7. atbp.

purke bat bsc graduate lang kami minamaliit nalang ninyu.

I also heard two teachers here in the US na product ng UP at UST. so far nag TNT na ngayun kasi na out sila sa system kung saan sila nag tuturo. i dont know the reason bat natanggal sila.
sa madaling sabi hindi ibig sabihin na kung napakaganda ng school mo magaling ka na.

kaming mga bscians pwede din kaming makipag sabayan.

Lastly, the school where we obtain our degree is not all that matters. What matters most is how you maximize your potentials and give honor to yourself, to your family, to your alma mater and to the community.

  114. Maricel says :

Thanks Doppledanger for the symphathy. I know ur also a CMU person. Yups it’s true that students of BSC / BSU looks pity especially in the above arguments / comments. OK fine BSC didn’t make it to the TOP 20 list. BUT……… be careful that………………….several products of this fora COULD ALSO COMPETE INTO THE ARENA OF GOBAL COMPETITIVENESs. Some are saying that education graduates of BSC are poor as far as english communication is concern.Let us pause for this question . Why are so many teachers who are product of BSC / BSU are now teaching in the US? Think about it. This is an indication that their products are highly competitive. Correct me if i’m wrong. And take note they are teaching American kids. My sister is teaching in the US ( state of Texas )for about 5 years. She often said that her Principal ask her if she graduated from UP. “I’m a graduate of Bukidnon State College ” she replied. Hope I also took education during my college days. Aside of being a noble profession i’ts also one of the easiest ways to get into the US to work. But anyway i don’t have any regrets being an account here in Makati. As of now i’m taking SPED course here in Manila for the hope that someday i could step on the most powerful country in the world…

I would like to thank the moderator for taking charge of a particular blogger (you know who you are)who has negative attitude towards others.

We live in a transparent world where people from foreign countries can browse what we have written in this site and perhaps can draw their opinions of what kind of people we are. Whether you (that negative person in the crowd) like it or not we, as Filipinos in Mindanao, represent our country. Bisag nia ta gapuyo sa third world country but we can share the world that we are descent, educated and respectful people here in the Philippines.
I hope I am making sense to my kababayans.

  118. Maricel says :

    transit.

i agree with you. bounded with intelligent students sa imong mata. puro lang mo topnotcher. og topnotcher unsa lugar dayun. know what even in the US most of the billionaires not even finished their undergraduate degree. most of them are college dropouts. better search it in the net. even if BSC / BSU’s products didn’t make it to the top list pwede namaing makisabayan into the arena of global competitiveness, and take note may nanalo din sa international competition—–take note professional category yun ha.

  119. phycophyta says :

thank you maricel for that such kind of idiot example… you know what… you are one of the funniest and small thinker i ever met… hallleerrr!!! the one you have mentioned “most of the billionaire not even finished their undergraduate degree” is just a bit of percentage comparing to the people who are successful in their college years… please, be a logical thinker always… do not show how poor your mind is thus, be SMART… now if the one you mentioned is true… they are only getting the sympathy of the people to follow them.. can you please add your site to become more reliable… but never mind… just search this and you will find the performance rating pf your school comparing to us…
    CMU— 9 out 0f 9— 100%
    BSC— 2 out of 2— swept 0%

Take note ha: PRC did not even consider you as a state university based on the name of the school as what you are shouting (BUKIDNON STATE UNIVERSITY)

  120. Maricel says :

    phycophyta

what? im one of the funniest and small thinker uve ever met? wow sobra ka naman. your too much! if im a small thinker do you think i could met dr. nora narido and dr. nenita prado of CMU in the international gathering held at Chulalongkorn Univ. way back 2005. that time we were one of those very few people who represented the country in the parallel sessions on international undertanding that tackles on global issues underscoring graduate education. shut up phyco. u don’t know me. and for one thing do not compare me to you. our gap is so great and never attempt to outsmart me . if you know what my credentials are mapahiya ka lang.

  121. Maricel says :

    phycophyta,

we’re not on the same level. maybe if you finished two PhD’s maybe that’s the time that you have the right to belittle a person like me who has double PhD’s ( statistics / research and evaluation)

  122. phcophyta says :

thanks for being true… ya hindi nga tayo ka level… im just a fresh B.S graduate but i feel I have graduated my PhD the way i respond you… You may have invested more credential than me and but i feel confident that my 1 exprience is equivalent to your 100 experiences…

    Hi EVERYONE,

My intentions in putting up this blog included providing space for discussion of public issues. A one to many communication model is already passe. A blog is an example of a “many to many” scheme, which helps in putting into light the opinions of as many people as possible on a subject matter or matters.

So far, with this single post, I am happy that it drew such following.

The topic of inter-school competition is healthy. But inter-school pittance such as a portion of the discussion above is unproductive, if not distasteful.

Please try to keep this as an open space for productive, reasonable, and insightful discussions.

I did not expect to find “dirty restroom graffiti” in a blog, which is a public domain.

Unless, those who key in such unwanted comments purposely throw disrespect to the bearer of the blog AND the general public who follows it.

    Peace!
